Sunday's Devotional for July

Sunday's Devotional Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Teach me to follow You.

Show me the joy of surrender,
the strength in sacrifice,
and the glory of Your purpose over my plans.

Make me a vessel of Your compassion,
a servant of Your mercy,
and a light for those still searching.

In Jesus' name, Our Lord and Saviour, Amen.

Resisting Evil Requires

Action, Sacrifice, and Conviction

It is in this season of life and motion that we are invited to ponder the true meaning of discipleship and what it means to follow Our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Not simply in our name but in the whole pattern of our lives.

The pursuit of faith and purpose becomes most sacred when it is tethered not to individual striving but to the call of Christ. Faith is not merely a passive belief but an active commitment. Jesus did not mince words when He said, "If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me" (Luke 9:23).

The daily cross is not a burden imposed by the world but a voluntary surrender to a higher order of living. It is the laying down of ego, ambition, and self-centered desires in exchange for the life of love, compassion, and mercy modeled by our Lord. The call to discipleship is not seasonal; it is relentless and daily.

And yet, what is the nature of this pursuit? Many are tempted to conflate purpose with productivity or to assume that success in worldly endeavors equals fulfillment. But the Gospel flips this paradigm. In the kingdom of Our Lord, to be fulfilled is to be emptied of self and filled with grace. In this paradox, we find sacred fulfillment: to live in such a way that our life becomes a vessel for His purpose. As it is written in the Septuagint, "Commit thy works unto the Lord, and thy thoughts shall be established" (Proverbs 16:3). There is an undeniable connection between surrender and clarity, between obedience and understanding. The purpose is not something one constructs in isolation; it is revealed in a relationship with our Lord and Creator.

Jesus taught this relational dynamic clearly when He said, "By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples if ye have love one to another" (John 13:35). Love is not an ancillary aspect of discipleship; it is its very essence. Compassion, forgiveness, and mercy are not optional acts of moral superiority but necessary fruits of a life lived in the Spirit. The Gospel does not permit us to apply righteousness selectively. Instead, it demands that love become our ethic and mercy our law. Discipleship without love is counterfeit. This emphasis on love in discipleship fosters a sense of connection and belonging, making us part of a loving community.

To have a better understanding of this call to discipleship. It is not a calling to change your career or abandon your family. It is a call to change your heart. To shift your priorities. Begin each day by asking whom you could serve. In serving others, you will find clarity. In extending grace, you will find purpose. In loving sacrificially, you will find fulfillment and not the hollow kind that fades with accolades but the sacred kind that roots the soul in eternal things. Your transformation will be a testament to the power of discipleship, offering hope and encouragement to all who seek to follow in his footsteps.

Sacred fulfillment is not found by elevating the self but by exalting Christ through every action, decision, and relationship. This is not abstract theology; it is a call to concrete living. In the parables, in the healings, and in His interactions with sinners and saints alike, Our Lord demonstrated that to follow Him is to lose oneself in love and thereby find one's life. This is what He meant when He said, "He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it" (Matthew 10:39). The true self is not discovered through indulgence but revealed through obedience.

The challenge you live with is not merely to believe in Jesus but to embody His teachings in the rhythms of your daily life. You live in a time saturated with self-expression and personal branding, yet discipleship will ask you to relinquish the spotlight and walk in the shadow of the cross. This is not a path for the faint of heart. It is a rugged road marked by humility, compassion, and the often costly choice to love when it is inconvenient. And yet, it is also the path of peace.

Sacred fulfillment begins when we surrender the pursuit of our name in favor of lifting His. For those who walk in faith and live with purpose, there is a promise not only of guidance but of transformation. As the Apostle Paul writes elsewhere, "For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them" (Ephesians 2:10). The walk of discipleship is not a vague journey, it is a divine blueprint. Every step taken in love is a step closer to sacred fulfillment.

This summer, as the skies declare the glory of Our Lord and Creator, fix your eyes not only on the heavens but on the One who walked the earth to show us the way. Rise each day with the resolve to follow Him. Not only in worship but, indeed, in truth and love. For in Him, and through Him, and to Him are all things. And in following Him, you will find your peace and not just purpose.
