Tuesday's Devotional for July

Tuesday's Devotional Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Grant me the insight
to ask the right questions.

Where I see only crossroads,
give me the eyes to perceive Your path.

Let the noise of the world
be silenced by the whisper of Your truth.

In Jesus' name, Our Lord and Saviour, Amen.

Being Saved Matters More

Than Being Seen

We look forward to June as the morning light stretches higher across the horizon, a reminder of how beautifully summer hums softly in the background. We find ourselves in a season that calls for discernment, as many fail to recognize what that truly means. Discernment is not merely a matter of decision-making, as many would think. It is the Spirit-given ability to perceive what is true, to gain spiritual guidance and understanding amid life’s noise. We are meant to stand watch as guardians of our choices. Life in this season often feels like a crosscurrent, sweeping us along in momentum and expectation. But clarity—the proper kind, the Spirit-breathed kind—is neither rushed nor impulsive. It arrives slowly, in sacred stillness, when the soul dares to listen.

In the Gospels, clarity and wisdom are often born in places of quiet, in hillsides and upper rooms, in prayerful withdrawal from the world’s noise. Jesus Himself, when confronted with crowds hungry for miracles, chose to teach first. Mark recounts that when “Jesus, when he came out, saw much people, and was moved with compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd: and he began to teach them many things” (Mark 6:34). Recognizing the absence of a shepherd is a profoundly important insight for us. Those who seek direction must first be willing to be taught.

Wisdom is not found in the accumulation of knowledge but in its alignment with divine truth. In the Septuagint, Proverbs 1:5 tells us, “A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels.” This verse grounds us in a principle echoed in every teaching: those who are teachable are those who will be led. Christ’s followers are not just believers. We are students of the faith. The ones who fight and struggle to hear Our Lord and Saviour rightly to see the world.

Yet, how often do we pray for wisdom, expecting a roadmap when the answer may come instead as a refining fire. In the Gospel of Luke, we encounter a stunning moment of revelation: after His resurrection, Christ meets His disciples and, in a gesture full of divine generosity, “Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures” (Luke 24:45). Here, clarity is not demanded but given. It is the work of Our Lord to open the mind, not merely to facts, but to truth imbued with meaning. He grants insight not to those who clamor for it in pride but to those who have walked the road of obedience and stayed close to His presence.

How often are we tempted to treat clarity like a commodity—something we extract through effort or reasoning. But spiritual insight is a gift. It flows not from our capacity to calculate outcomes but from our willingness to surrender ourselves entirely to outcomes. A person who surrenders pride, who waits patiently before Our Father, will often see more in stillness than others do in motion.

The life of faith is a journey of progressive illumination. We do not receive all light at once. As the psalmist declares in the Septuagint tradition, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path” (Psalm 119:105). This is not a floodlight revealing the entire landscape but a lantern showing us the next step. That is the pace of divine clarity. It teaches us to walk with reverence, not arrogance.

As we navigate June’s longer days and the weight of choices, both large and small, pressing into our minds, please ask yourself: Am I seeking answers that confirm my inclinations or wisdom that transforms them? The former can be found in the marketplace of ideas, the latter only through abiding with Christ. To gain clarity is not to be rid of uncertainty but to become anchored in the voice that calls us forward, even when the way is unclear. This transformative power of wisdom should inspire us in our journey.

A person might take a simple step today: to pause before a decision, to whisper, “Lord, what would bring You glory?”—and wait in faith. Perhaps they will journal what they hear or talk to someone who walks closely with Our Lord and Creator. The practice of discerning becomes the habit of wisdom, empowered by the act of prayer.

Wisdom and clarity, after all, are not ends in themselves. They are invitations. They beckon us toward the kind of life Our Lord and Saviour modeled. One rooted in grace, anchored in truth, and responsive to the Spirit’s gentle promptings. Clarity without Christ is still blindness. But clarity with Christ? That is life and light. Spiritual clarity is cultivated. It matures with time, intention, and communion. We cannot microwave wisdom. We must dwell on it. And as we do, we find that the fog begins to lift, not because we’ve mastered the world, but because we’ve submitted to the One who holds it.

Thus, let it be said that we waited faithfully and not wandered. And in that waiting, we heard the whisper of Our Lord and Saviour, beckoning us toward the narrow road, the holy way, the wise path.
